William Howard Livens was a British engineer best known for greatly improving the efficiency of chemical weapons used in the First and Second World Wars. To lesser acclaim, between the conflicts, he is also credited with developing the first prototype of a modern, front-loading dishwasher, descendants of which are now ubiquitous in homes around the world.

Cologne-based music composer Severino Pfifferling “plays” a modern version of one of Livens’ domestic marvels, by hand, percussively, as well as prepared and programmed in advance to execute a sequence of semi-generative, musically-relevant functions. This often-rhythmic foundation is accompanied using another now-common home appliance of military origin, the music synthesizer.

On this release, Pfifferling guides us through an augmented dark cycle of insecure longing for cleanliness and convenience; starting with the loading, through pre-wash, pump action, rinsing, drying and finally to the assumed resolution of unloading. The kitchen is an environment of hope, but also fear and uncertainty, a reality that Pfifferling refuses to let us delegate to our cherished, efficient household automatons. Let us look upon our mess.
