about

The second volume of the Learning by Listening series introduces newcomers to the competitive table game Bangara-Rossa. Written and presented by leading figures (individual biographies below) from the Instituto Bangara-Rossa Internacional, the game’s most prominent officially-recognised governing body, this audio cassette contains clear and easy-to-follow explanations of the rules and set-up of the game, some fascinating historical background details, and, in keeping with the raison d'être of the Learning by Listening series, finely-crafted, purpose-made music designed to help the listener receive and retain the target knowledge with maximum efficiency. Reassuring drones, stimulating arpeggios and logical sound progressions plot an achievable course to understanding this notoriously complex table sport. After listening to this enjoyable tape just four to six times, any Bangara-Rossa neophyte should feel completely secure seated before the hexagon-printed baize.

The winner of the Benson & Hedges Bangara-Rossa World Series (1991 & 1996), he has dedicated much of his life to the preservation and promotion of the game through which he achieved global fame.

He studied at the Sorbonne, where he received his doctorate in Mathematics. As an enthusiastic part-time musicologist, he has edited for publication previously undiscovered manuscripts of works by by Buxtehude, Fux and Scheidt.

Great grandson of legendary Bangarist Odon Zelinsky, Joseph Hildesheimer's love of the game was nurtured from a young age in the salons and spielhäuser of Vienna, Trieste and Maribor.

A former World Invitational winner himself (1999), he now combines occasional competitive appearances with an informal ambassadorial role on behalf of the IBRI, as well as his editorial responsibilities with the Zeitschrift für Celtische Philologie.

The Instituto Bangara-Rossa Internacional (IBRI), incorporated by Royal Monégasque Charter, is the players’ governing body and gaming providers’ institute for Bangara-Rossa worldwide.

It covers all aspects of the game. It currently has around 300 individual and 39 institutional members.

The role of the IBRI is to promote the values of Bangara-Rossa, functionally, socially, psychologically and morally. It also runs a number of programmes to define, help and maintain the highest possible standards of gaming practice. This includes award schemes such as the IBRI Sturgeon Awards, best practice guidelines, and surveys including the annual IBRI Report and annual BR Player Census, and a full range of advisory services.

Founded in 1917, its members account for over 85 per cent of the casino spend in Europe. All IBRI members actively participate in the IBRI’s programme of continuing strategic development.

Learning by Listening is an educational, instructive cassette series designed to bring the information of the world into your home, and your brain. Our educator-developed, pedagogically-sound methodology harnesses the power of music to fully open the listening receptors, allowing both facts and abstract concepts smooth, unimpeded entry to the relevant zones of the human mind. Each non-accredited volume of the cassette series will cover a significant and edifying topic, presented verbally and musically by experts (or qualified enthusiasts) in that field. As the series grows, collectors will have the opportunity to build a home audio reference library, providing themselves with a vast ocean of musically-enhanced, easily-attainable knowledge, all conveniently storable on a wall-mounted shelving unit. Illuminate your ears, by learning, by listening.
